Throughout school we use a "Reading Viper" approach to improve key reading skills. Each letter in VIPERS represent a different strand, V=vocabulary, I=inference, P=prediction, E=explain, R=retrieve and the S= sequence (within KS1). Today was our first introduction to the vocabulary viper that looks closely at the words used by the author, introducing the idea of synonyms and antonyms. In our "Funnybones" text it is inferred that it is night time because of the repetitive phrase "dark" the children explored this and created alternative for synonyms and antonyms for the opening passage. When hearing your child read at home look for opportunities to use the reading viper questions located in your school reading record with ideas for questions to ask to help develop these crucial skills.
