Reading, Our Library and 'The Learning Zone'
Our Belief in the Importance of Reading
Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don't, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.
What Difference can I make as a Parent?
The short answer to this is: A LOT!!
Parents are by far the most important educators in a child's life. It is never too early for a child to begin to enjoy books. We believe reading at home, even if only for a few minutes a day, is the basis of your child's learning. Our chosen reading scheme in school is Oxford Reading Tree. Over the years, the scheme has taught millions of children to read and to love to read. Its well-loved characters, breadth and unrivalled support give children everything they need to become confident readers. You, as parents, can help your child become a confident reader by spending a few minutes every day listening to them read their reading book at home.
Because of our strong belief in the benefits of reading, we have developed a bright and inviting Library space in school. We were able to develop this space with help from the National Lottery through an Awards for All grant.
The Library was officially opened in July 2015 by children's author Damian Harvey. Children are given the opportunity to borrow a book, which they can also enjoy at home. We have also opened up our Library to younger siblings of children in school, who can also choose a book to take home and enjoy with their family. This means we are helping to create a thirst for reading from an early age.
Not only do we offer books in our Library, we also have Library Lending Bags. These are available for Reception Class children and younger siblings to enjoy at home. The bags contain a variety of age-appropriate activities for children to enjoy at home.
The impact of our focus on reading and investment in reading resources, can be seen in the high standards achieved by children in all subjects and especially reading, throughout the school.
The Learning Zone
In recent years we have developed the area, which was initially known as our 'Computer Suite', to become a multi purpose, all round 'Learning Zone'. The Library is part of this Zone. In addition to books, this area is extremely well equipped with PCs, iPads, Kindles and laptops, meaning all children have access to a wide range of techniques to enhance their learning. The Learning Zone is timetabled so that each class is given at least one slot throughout the week. The wall displays in this area teach children technology terminology and encourage children to be mindful of e-safety.
